Yosemite News Release

The ongoing Yosemite art series which showcases a variety of creative mediums continues this weekend at The Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley’s grand, historic national landmark hotel. Designed to share the wealth of regional artistic talent with park guests, the fifth monthly exhibition of “Artisans at The Ahwahnee” commences Friday with a showing of Yosemite watercolor paintings by Alison Grove. Her works will be on display and available for purchase from 1pm to 5pm on Friday and Saturday, concluding the same hours on Sunday, April 20.

Having lived in Yosemite National Park since March 1985, Grove spends much of her summer vacation time on backpacking trips. As she journeys through Yosemite’s high country, she captures the mountains, streams and waterfalls in pastel watercolors. “It’s a wonderful way to commune with my natural surroundings,” says Grove. “I love splashing about with lots of color and water, always finding new and intriguing mixes within the washes. The color combinations sometimes surprise even me.”

Grove hails from Orlando, Florida and began attending art classes early in her life. Her mother attributes her artistic start to the drawing of a perfect rose before entering kindergarten. She has retired her elementary school crayons in favor of watercolors, a medium which she discovered during a class taught in Yosemite by local artisan Darlace Cleveland. Grove admits watercolors are her main focus, but says “I also dabble in pastels and acrylics.”
